It’s with great sadness that I share with you the news that Flamingo Paperie, the publisher of the beautiful cards and stationery that I have been selling for over 20 years, has decided to close its doors for the last time. I am, however, very pleased to let you know that I have a high level of stock at home and I will continue with my lovely business until I have no more to sell. I’ll also be attending lots of my regular events, so hopefully I will see some of you there.You’ll notice a change to the online shop on my website, and I will be sending your orders to you directly from my kitchen, which will be fun. Now that Shrove Tuesday has passed in a flurry of pancake tossing, Mothering Sunday is the on the horizon and I wondered if my view of the origin of the day was correct.Google explains that it was started by an American woman in 1907 who held a memorial service for her mother and soon after (the US catches on remarkably quickly even in pre-internet times!), most places in America were observing the day, with a National Holiday being declared in 1914. The US celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in March, which makes me feel a the heap better, and of course, our Mothering Sunday in celebrated much earlier. As an aside, you lucky American Moms here in the UK get to be celebrated twice!!I prefer our British explanation…in the Middle Ages, the custom developed of allowing those who had moved away from where they grew up to come back to visit their home or ‘mother’ church and their mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is why Mothering Sunday in the UK is not on the same day each year.Hopefully this year it will be easier to spend time with your Mother, or like me, you’ll be thinking of her…Love, Elizabeth xx
